Alaska's
Arctic Coastal Plain
Job Description:
DEADHORSE CAMP
Cook EXTREME arctic!!!
Don’t stop until you reach the top!!!
Live and work at the top of the world on Alaska's Arctic Coastal Plain!!!
THE REGION
Our longest winter night --- 63 days, 23 hours, 40 minutes.
Nowhere are the extremes conditions, brought about by intense sunlight and darkness, on such vivid and stark display as the high arctic environment that is Alaska’s Arctic Coastal Plain.
Early-September --- extreme winter dark transforms the Arctic Coastal Plain into a vast white landscape that inspires awe and humility --- the WHITE season is a time when, and a place where, only the most adaptable of humans, plants and animals are able to sustain life.
Late-May --- sunlight’s return is the catalyst for glimpses of brown that begin to punctuate the white and frozen landscape, and thus signaling the beginning of spring --- the BROWN season is a very short but welcome reminder that summer quickly approaches.
Early-June --- the sun once again reigns supreme as life flourishes in summer’s 24-hour arctic sunlight --- the GREEN season is a time of hurried excitement as all arctic life participates in a race against time to harvest nature’s summer abundance as a foreboding nine-month winter looms on time’s horizon. Late-August --- an increasingly absent sun leads to a quick arrival of fall --- the RED season sees a brilliant blanket of yellow, orange, and red pulled over the tundra just weeks before the landscape will be dressed in winter white once again.
The amazingly intense seasonal transitions make Alaska's Arctic Coastal Plain an icon of America's wilderness --- a place of simple splendor and passionate inspiration for those intrepid souls who choose to venture off-the-beaten-path to experience it.
THE CAMP
Deadhorse camp is located at mile 413.6 of the Dalton Highway, at the northern terminus of the only road in the Western Hemisphere to reach the Arctic Ocean. Directly to the NORTH is the oil field services community of Deadhorse, the Prudhoe Bay oil fields, and the shores of the Arctic Ocean. The Sagavanirktok River runs a few hundred yards to the EAST, backdropped by a magnificent tundra/mountain view of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Far to the SOUTH are rolling foothills leading to the Brooks Mountain Range and the Gates of the Arctic National Park. A view to the WEST towards Barrow delivers the vast tundrascape of the Arctic Coastal Plain for as far as the eye can see.
Deadhorse Camp offers camp-style accommodations in a snug 17-room camp with additional rooms available in adjacent skid-housing. With true-to-the-region accommodations, Deadhorse Camp has just what the adventure-seeker in this remote region is looking for --- a clean, comfortable place to stay accompanied by good food. In summer 2008, Deadhorse Camp will provide overnight accommodations and buffet meals for approx. 30-40 guests on a daily basis --- primarily composed of work crews.
THE WORK
Deadhorse Camp’s winter season begins 01 October 2008 and runs through 15 February 2009. All successful employment candidates will ideally be available to begin work by mid-October [25 October preferred]and continue through the middle of February.

A team consisting of just four coworkers will work together toward the goal of making Deadhorse Camp’s 2008/2009 summer season a success. Adventurous People Needed to Complete Historic Buddhist Monuments
Job Location: Coastal Mountains of
Sonoma County, CA
Job Description:
Adventurous people needed to complete historic Buddhist momuments:
Heavy Construction, Bronze Casting and Metal Finishing, Landscaping, Sewing, Book Production, Electroless Nickel and Gold Plating.
The Odiyan Center is seeking volunteers for a large-scale sacred art and text preservation project. Cast bronze statues of sacred figures within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition ranging from 3 to 36 inches tall. Help construct Cintamani Temple: positions are available for those with or willing to learn masonry and construction skills. Landscaping needs include large-tree planting, orchard pruning and maintenance of 125 acres of parks and gardens. Join our community’s efforts to continue a 20-year project: preserving sacred Tibetan texts. Or put your love of fabric to a meritorious use: sew sacred Buddhist images in cloth. Learn new skills or share your own experience! • Bronze Casting and Metal Finishing: Lost wax and sand casting methods, welding and metal finishing. Professional foundry on-site. Electroless nickel and gold plating facility. • Construction: Unique 125 ft. temple structure - Steel fabrication. Concrete work including poured-in-place, masonry, and pre-cast. Granite fabrication and installation. Heavy equipment operation and maintenance. Electrical, plumbing, heating and ventilation work.
• Landscaping: our grounds needs are not for the faint of heart: the property at Odiyan extends over 1000 acres, with 125 acres of parks, gardens, flower beds, fruit orchards and grass. For those with a serious love of the outdoors, willingness to work independently and a strong back.
• Book Production: Half of the community at Odiyan is busy with construction projects in our efforts to preserve sacred Tibetan art, while the other half works diligently to preserve the incredibly precious texts. Our team of printers, folder operators and bindery workers is kept busy all year long in the huge effort of reproducing hundreds of thousands of books each year that are given away annually at the World Peace Ceremony in Bodhgaya India.
• Sewing: one traditional aspect of Tibetan Buddhism is the use of cloth as ornamentation and for prayers. The property at Odiyan is alive with huge colorful prayer flags, screenprinted and sewn on-site. Banners, picture frames and clothing are just a few of the other things that are being stitched. A huge project is about to begin: sewing 250,000 beautiful pieces to go along with our annual shipment of books to Bodhgaya India.
Gain practical, hands-on experience while living in beautiful, rural coastal Northern California amongst a caring, supportive community that fosters inner growth. No religious affiliation necessary. Other community activities include cooking, gardening, building maintenance, optional classes and discussions. Challenging, meaningful work. Room, board, stipend, and training provided.
